Permit-led planning
Gorilla permits are capacity-controlled and booked through Rwanda Development Board's official system or a legitimate operator arrangement. The live portal is the right place for current price and availability.
The morning briefing and assigned group shape the day. Accommodation location, transfer time and a conservative arrival plan matter, especially when starting from Kigali or crossing a border.
The trek
Forest tracks can be muddy, steep and slippery. The time needed to reach a gorilla group varies, so travellers should prepare for uncertainty rather than a fixed-duration walk.
Warm layers, rain protection, gloves and suitable footwear are useful. Discuss mobility needs before permits are committed; the park team, not a marketing page, controls group allocation and safety decisions.
Responsible encounter
Current guidance includes a minimum age, small tracking groups, a regulated viewing period, health exclusions, distance and no-flash photography. Rangers may require more distance depending on circumstances.
Stay quiet, keep bags and food controlled and follow instructions if a gorilla moves closer. Responsible tracking protects both visitors and a species vulnerable to human disease.
